Census Web Map
GIS Lab Exercise 3
By: Evan Kebus
Goal:
The goal of this lab is to learn how to download and map data from the U.S Census Bureau both in ArcMap and in ArcGIS Online. Learn how to download 2010 Census data from the US Census Bureau and how to download a shapefile of the 2010 Census boundaries from the US Census Bureau. Join this downloaded data and create an new shapefile. Map the data accurately. Download and map a variable of your choice following the same steps as before. You should be able to build a layout with both maps and build a web map with one of the variables on ArcGIS Online.

Method:
Open up a web browser and go to the US Census Bureau Fact Finder Website. In the "Topics" section choose People, Basic Count/Estimate and then population total. Then choose counties from the "Geography" section. Choose County 050 and specify Wisconsin as the state. Then select all counties in Wisconsin and click add. There are two primary census data sets to work with the SF1 and the ACS. SF1 is the basic standard Census data which is what we are working with in this exercise. Find the variable P1 for Total Population from the 2010 SF1 data set. Select this tab then click on Download and download it a folder where you can easily access it. Make sure to change the labels to meet ArcMap standards. Add both these tables and find a variable to join them with. Add this data to the map of Wisconsin. Choose another variable from the United States Census website that interest you and repeat the same steps as before. Include the appropriate map elements: title, legend, north arrow, scale, date, source, your name and be sure to include the year 2010 when the census gathered the data. After both maps are complete select the first one and save it in a separate document. You will use this map to configure a web map service to share on ArcGIS online. Log into ArcGIS Online from ArcMap. Click on Sign in with your enterprise login. Choose an attribute to show and select D001. You will now create a web map from the service.Configure a Pop-up window. Give your map an appropriate title that reflects the attribute information. Change the alias for NAME to County and D001 to Population. Test your pop-up by clicking on any country within your map. Save and enter appropriate Title, Tags, and summary for the web map you designed. Click Share to make this map accessible to other people.

Results:
At the end of this lab you should be able to join data table that you have downloaded from the United States Census Bureau. Add your finished product to ArcGIS Online to the Geography and Anthropology section of the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire contents page. Your finished project should be neat, clean and accessible with working pop-up windows.
